The goal of this class project was to design in three dimensions. My model was selected to represent student work in the school's recent CIDA accreditation review.
My sculpture has a horizontal orientation which is created by dominant horizontal lines. The forms of the styrofoam blocks move your eyes across the sculpture. This effect is also aided by the fact that the blocks cantilever over negative space, making the horizontal forms seem longer than they actually are. The sphere provides relief from the repetitive shapes and sharp angles with a round form and gives the entire sculpture a pleasing asymmetrical balance.
The shape and form of my sculpture was initially inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Prairie Style” of design. The dominant horizontal lines of his architecture were meant to mimic the flat lands of the prairies in the Midwest. I also took inspiration from Bauhaus aesthetics, which favored simple geometric forms.
